Clown Garbage Can

Clown Garbage Can

Even the garbage cans were quite festive at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE).

Baby Ducks

I get the impression they are staring at me and thinking "What are you looking at?"

Cute Chick

Cute Chick

PNE: Hastings and Renfrew - Vancouver, BC
These little guys and girls were just recently hatched. I didn't pet a lot of animals at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) but this little guy was so cute, I couldn't resist.

Cute Chicks

I had to bring my little camera so close, I was afraid they were going to rush me and peck at my lens.

Cow and Boy

Cow and Boy

PNE: Hastings and Renfrew - Vancouver, BC
There was a 4-H competition to find the best Swine, Beef, Dog, Rabbit and Llama around. I am guessing this cow won something as she was separated into her own pen in the middle of the building.

This was the biggest cow I have ever seen. It was roughly the size of a medium sized car.

This is the kind of view a bug might have.

Time for a Break

Time for a Break

PNE: Hastings and Renfrew - Vancouver, BC
This young boy was caught taking a break with his favourite bovine. All the animals were quite docile and didn't mind (err... perhaps I should say didn't react) to kiddies petting and prodding them or cameras flashing them.

Coyote Reconnaissance Vehicle

Coyote Reconnaissance Vehicle

PNE: Hastings and Renfrew - Vancouver, BC
This is a Coyote Reconnaissance Vehicle operated by the Canadian Forces. For the next couple of days this vehicle can be seen at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) just outside the always popular Super Dogs show. The soldier on site explained how the Coyote would be parked somewhere and the camera system which looks a lot like Disney's WALL-E (anyone else think there might be a law suit here?) could be located hundreds of feet away and operated remotely from within the relative safety of the vehicle. The camera has optical and thermal capabilities. The operator's seat was quite tiny (think 12 year old boy size). It gave me a new found appreciation of what these soldiers have to go through.

We don't have to support the wars, but we should support the brave men and women who are asked to fight them.

WALL-E?

Sand Sculpture Competition

Sand Sculpture Competition

PNE: Hastings and Renfrew - Vancouver, BC
The PNE is hosting the 6th Annual International Sand Sculpture Competition from August 25th to 29th. Unfortunately, I was a little too early and most of the contestants haven't completed their sand sculptures yet, but I did manage to see this sculpture. The details on this sculpture was really quite amazing. Unfortunately, in my haste to see everything at the fair I didn't get a chance to see who created this work of art.

Canstruction Vancouver - Mario

Canstruction Vancouver - Mario

PNE: Hastings and Renfrew - Vancouver, BC
Canstruction is Vancouver’s most unique design-build competition. Teams from the engineering, architectural and graphic design communities, along with school and youth teams, create amazing sculptures out of canned food – all for a good cause. When the exhibition is over, all the food is donated to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank where it will help to feed 25,000 people each week.

This canstruction is their take on the Nintendo classic Super Mario Bros. It was definitely my favourite and can be seen at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) fair grounds. On display were canstructions of the Pillsbury Dough Boy, a fallen ice cream cone, a whack-a-mole game, a giant piggy bank and others. There was even a giant scrabble board and cans that kids could use to build their own canstructions. Entertaining and raising awareness, what more could you ask for?

Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) - 100 Years of Fun

Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) - 100 Years of Fun

PNE: Hastings and Renfrew - Vancouver, BC
Once a year the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is held in BC and this year is no exception. In fact, this year the PNE is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Today, between 9 AM and 12 PM, they were offering free admission and free is a good price, right? Regular admission is $20 but there are a few discounts available around town. For example, you could pick up tickets at the 7-11 for $16.80.

Anyways, I decided to put my work aside and join in the madness. I say madness because there was a crazy amount of people there. I am going to be putting up some more pictures in the near future but this is the giant balloon advertising the fair that was floating high above.
